Words per minute is calculated by dividing the total number of words typed by the time taken in minutes. This gives your gross WPM. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for errors, giving a more accurate picture of effective typing speed.
Gross WPM only counts raw typing volume divided by time, ignoring mistakes. Net WPM subtracts your error count from the total, so it reflects how much correct, usable text you actually produced — which is usually the more meaningful number for typing tests and job assessments.
Standard typing tests count 5 characters (including spaces) as one word, regardless of actual word boundaries, since real words vary a lot in length. If you're entering an actual word count from your own document, that's fine too — this calculator works with either.
